Why studying medicine is about a lot more than medicine
Recently I've been thinking really hard (literally for 5 minutes this morning in the shower) about whether I actually want to do medicine, writes Lily Copping.I've never shined in one thing. I don't have one talent or subject area that everyone knows me for. I love singing and writing songs, but also reading really long articles in scientific journals about new antibiotics with unnecessarily hard-to-pronounce names.**Like, seriously, why?And this has always been a regret of mine. That I didn't...

The ignorance racism and bigotry of my countrymen when it comes
I continue to be horrified and saddened by the ignorance, racism and bigotry of so many of my fellow countrymen and women, writes Stephen Petter.I refer to the unfeeling, irresponsible, inhumane, even un-British reaction to the tide of desperate migrants bravely seeking safety and a useful life for their families. The shameful refusal of our present Government to accept more than a very few of these people contrasts sharply with our near neighbours' humanity. It also flies in the face of common...

Figures on deaths caused by exhaust fumes make sobering reading
The latest Bristol City Council figures on deaths caused by vehicle exhaust emissions make sobering reading. The figures show that 24 people died as a direct result of exhaust fumes – two and a half more than the nine people who died in actual road crashes. The figures allow us to draw some interesting conclusions. Firstly, they cast doubt on the logic behind the city's £2.3m spend on 20mph zones. Clearly, speed is not Bristol's problem, particularly as the latest figures are from...

Local council appreciate anonymous Bristol street artists
A cheeky piece of street art arrived on Weston-super-Mare's beach - only to be appreciated by the local council it was teasing.Anonymous street artist John D'oh put up a sign reading: "No low-lifes beyond this point as you spoil the view of the posh people in the beach chalets." The work was a mockery of a sign recently put up in front of beach huts by the council asking people not to use the promenade. But although the artist was posing as the council, they seemed impressed by the...

Transport leaders urged Please dont kick Henbury Loop
Support for a Henbury Loop which would create a circular rail route around Bristol is virtually universal. But transport experts have repeatedly said the business case for a loop does not stack up and recommend a "spur" instead. On passenger numbers alone, they say the extra cost of a loop cannot be justified - at least for now.The projected number of passengers for the "spur" which would see trains stop at Henbury and return to Temple Meads instead of going on to Avonmouth, is...
